Blueberries, strawberries, and a whole lot of healthy goodness! This mixed berry smoothie is the perfect grab and go breakfast for summer.
I have been making this smoothie for years and it is the perfect breakfast when I am racing out the door. There is antioxidants from the berries, potassium and sweetness from the bananas, healthy fats from flax seeds, and the endless benefits that come from raw milk. Throw in your favorite protein powder and stay full until lunch with this incredibly light yet filling mixed berry smoothie.
I am an avid runner and I live in Texas. That said, it is precisely one billion degrees here in the summer. Every morning after my run I would make this exact smoothie. I’m not sure if there is any science behind this, but I swear it was cooling me down from the inside out. Drinking this smoothie helped refuel me in so many ways. I felt more energized after and loved that it was so cold! That’s exactly why this mixed berry smoothie is perfect for summer.
This smoothie is also my go-to when I am feeling a bit under the weather. If I am having stomach troubles, headache, or feeling lethargic, the health benefits from this smoothie genuinely helped me feel normal again. It was also a great pick-me-up after girls nights when there was way too much pizza and chocolate involved!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Simple – It’s as easy as throwing frozen fruit and supplements in a blender and calling it a day. You don’t have to be a chef or take up a ton of time in the kitchen to make this delicious recipe!
Sustainable – This smoothie is a great way to use up fruit that is about to go bad. It’s also a great way to create more freezer space and use up any frozen fruit you have. This recipe ensures nothing goes to waste.
Healthy – Antioxidants from the berries, potassium from the banana, filling from your favorite protein powder, the list goes on and on. It’s filled with all the good stuff and none of the yucky preservatives found in pre-packaged shakes.
Tips For Making This Mixed Berry Smoothie
- Use a room temperature banana. I have definitely used frozen bananas in this recipe before and it is totally fine. But I find that the smoothie is a bit creamier and easier to blend when the banana isn’t frozen.
- If you do use a frozen banana, you might have to wait a few minutes to drink your smoothie. If all of the fruit is frozen, it makes the consistency very thick and the smoothie has a hard time moving through the straw. If you don’t want to wait, I would just add more milk or water for a thinner consistency.
- Add nut butter. I have skipped this step before and it’s just not the same. The peanut butter in this is a game changer! If you are allergic to peanuts, of course add your favorite nut butter.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Frozen Blueberries – Any frozen fruit will help keep this smoothie cold. I love this because it’s ice with health benefits! Frozen fruit is also easier on the blender than ice cubes.
Frozen Strawberries
Banana – I recommend using a room temperature banana, but if you have frozen bananas that’s okay too.
Flaxseeds – This is a great way to add healthy fats first thing in the morning.
Chia seeds – Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber which keeps you fuller longer. If you don’t have any you can opt out.
Peanut butter – The healthy fats from peanut butter are great, but I mainly add it because of the flavor it adds to the smoothie! If you’re allergic or not a fan of peanut butter that’s okay. I still recommend adding a nut butter of some kind if you can. It’s so delicious!
Protein powder – This acts as a thickening agent in the smoothie. This is also the main protein source that will keep you fuller longer. Add any kind of protein powder you’d like. I recommend using a vanilla flavored one. The protein powder I use also has greens in it. Bonus points if you can sneak greens in too!
Milk – I use raw milk. If you are interested in learning more about raw milk I would recommend reading this post. There are also links within the post for other resources.
Blender – I use a NutriBullet, but any blender will work fine.

How to Make The Perfect Mixed Berry Smoothie
Break apart your banana in smaller pieces and place in the blender cup.
Add the frozen blueberries and strawberries on top.
Next add the milk. By adding the milk first, this will prevent the dry ingredients from sticking to the bottom and not mixing well.
Add in your chia seeds, flax seeds, and protein powder. Don’t forget the peanut butter! Or any nut butter of your choosing.
Shake well before blending.
Blend it up and enjoy!
FAQs
I have tried this and the smoothie ends up turning a little brown and luke-warm despite leaving it in the fridge. If you want to prep this ahead of time, I would recommend leaving the smoothie in the freezer and setting it out on the counter in the morning to let it thaw a bit.
There might be a slight difference since the milk makes the smoothie creamier. But I have made this smoothie so many times with water and loved it. I would recommend adding slightly less water so you can still get the thicker consistency.
Absolutely! Sometimes I will have this smoothie will a side of avocado toast. It is truly the perfect blend of sweet and savory.
